Upper Mustang Trek Overview
Nepal was declared Federal Democratic abolishing the monarchy and this Himalayan nation is not a kingdom anymore. The Upper Mustang area of Nepal is considered the last forbidden kingdom of Nepal. The journey to this trans-Himalayan destination is mystical as well as mythical.

The trek to Upper Mustang begins with the flight to Jomsom which is the windiest town in Nepal. The walking starting point is located within the Jomsom Muktinath Trekking and Annapurna Circuit Trek. The trail follows the Kaligandaki River and a barren treeless landscape. Lower Mustang doesn’t require a special permit, but the Upper Mustang journey requires a special permit as it is the restricted trekking region of Nepal.
Trekkers traverse through abandoned and tranquil hamlets. Mani Walls, Chortens, and Gompas are frequent sights that resemble the great influence of Tibetan culture. Once featured in National Geography Channel Kaligandaki the deepest gorge in the world could enhance your geographical general knowledge. You will also be spiritually revitalized when you discover that fossils rock (Saligram) on the banks of the river represents Lord Bishnu from Hindu mythology.
The mysterious hill caves en route to Lo Manthang are also very famous throughout the world. It is believed that during war and famine, people took shelter in these hill caves. Upper Mustang Trek Permits and Cost
Upper Mustang is close to the border with Tibet and this area is considered Restricted. The cost of the permit to enter this special area is $500 per Person for 10 days and $50 per day thereafter. And an extra $28 is needed to pay each trekker for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project.
Note: A minimum of two trekkers can travel to Upper Mustang and you need to organize the trip with an authorized trekking company

Today our journey begins with an adventurous Drive to Pokhara. The range of beautiful green Hills and roaring Rivers give you extra pleasure while we drive to your destination. After a five-hour drive, we will reach another beautiful city Pokhara which nature has arranged majestically. You can spend your free time in the city boating on Phewa lake or hiking around Lakeside. overnight in Pokhara.
Note: Flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara is available at an extra cost ($95).
Early in the morning, we will head towards the airport for a spectacular flight to Jomsom. With the 25-minute adventurous flight among the giant Mountains Dhaulagiri and Annapurna range, we reach Jomsom. We can have a tea break and enjoy the beautiful view of Mt. Nilgiri and start our trek by crossing the suspension bridge over the Kaligandaki River. After two hours walk along the bank of Kali Gandaki River, we will be in Kagbeni. After lunch, we can visit the interestingly clustered settlement of Kagbeni and its Monasteries. Overnight in Kagbeni
After checking special permits in Kagbeni we start our journey along the Kaligandaki Riverbank. The sandy and windy trails follow the up and downhill. Following the way, we can enjoy the scenic view of the Mountains and a color full dry land with small fields of Buckwheat, barley, white, and apple orchards. Reaching the small village of Tango, we will continue our trek to Chhusang village where we can visit the Monastery, we will even cross the river and continue climbing up north to a huge red mass of ruined castles that has fallen from the cliff above. Then we leave the Kaligandaki valley and trek steeply up a rocky gorge to Chele. Overnight in teahouse
Today we begin our trek with a steep climb to Eklo Bhatti and continue to Taklam la pass (3620m/ 11905ft) through plateaus and constricted stretches with a great view of Mountain Tilicho and Yaskawa. Further, walking down to the little village Samar our trip gets through ascending above Samara village to the ridge. Continuing our trip for another three hours walks takes us to Syanbochen. The surrounding cool streams and juniper trees along with the best scenic view will make our hike more wonderful. Finally, we pass by a famous cave known as Ramchung to end our today’s trip. Today we start our trek uphill to Yamada la (3850m/12,667ft), pass through a teahouse, Chortens, and Local settlements similar to Tibetans style. We cross the mountain pass and the most remarkable fields where people grow food in extremely arid conditions. Climbing up to Nyi pass would be a bit long and tough and Descend to our today's destination Ghaymi, surrounded by large fields. Overnight in Ghami.
After breakfast, we start our pleasant hike to Charang (Tsarang). Crossing the long suspension bridge over Tangmar River and climbing to a plateau and passing a long Mani wall, the trailhead east to the village of Charang, which was also the capital of Mustang lo kingdom in the 14th century. After lunch, we spend our time exploring the village and its large Monastery. Overnight in a Charang.
Today we begin our trek to Lo-Mangthang with majestic views of Mt. Annapurna, Nilgiri, Tilicho and many others. We follow the valley bed, past the ruins of ancient fortresses and Gompas. After crossing the river, the trail ascends gently to the windy pass of Lo, from where we can get an overview of the Lo Mangthang valley. The walled city appears with its outstanding hills on the Tibetan border. Overnight in Lomanthang.
Since our whole trek till today gets you trekking on foot to reach here, we recommended pony to explore the day off you have in Lo Manthang.
Exploring the Mustang, known as “The lost kingdom of Tibet” Today we return back from our trek taking a different route. Trek to Dhakmar via Gyakar lets you visit more than 1200 years old Ghar Gompa with Guru Rinpoche as the prime figure. The Gompa is also famous for its rock painting. Overnight in Dhakmar.
After breakfast, we start our hike back to Syanboch, along the way we can enjoy the scenic view of the Himalayas and the Colorful dry land Mustang. The trail must be dusty because of the heavy wind. After 6 hour walk, we will be in Syanboche.
Today we trek back to Chhuksang. Enjoying the scenic view of the Mountain and passing the local settlement we will reach Chhuksang after a 6-hour hike. Overnight in a teahouse.
Today we will head toward Jomsom an urban city. We have the option to drive, but the GSA team recommends walking as we pass through the huge-sided valley of Kaligandaki, and the isolated villages with a giant houses, we can experience the landscapes and local culture. The barren landscape of this area resembles Tibet. After 7 hours long day hike, we reach Jomsom.
A long memorial trek in the restricted area in Annapurna Conservation comes to an end today. We end our Adventure with a farewell dinner in the evening.
