Gokyo Trek Review of Our Previous Trekkers
Before explaining the experience during Gokyo Valley trekking step by step, I would like to share an authentic encounter from one of our previous trekkers. I also had really great experiences with his team last year, guiding them via peaceful trails. My team attempted to provide the best services throughout 10 days of trekking, and they also loved each day because of surprises at every step of untouched trails.
They did not regret choosing the Everest Base Camp trek as much as we did as travel companions for their Everest adventure that takes them to a hidden gem, the Valley of Gokyo, located near the popular Dudhpokhari (Third Gokyo Lake), and to the top of Gokyo Ri (5357 m) for a 360-degree view of mountains, the Ngozumpa Glacier, and the valley. Check below’s review of how sweetly he has shared his personal experience on the Gokyo route with Green Society Adventure, as I have kept his lines with no changes.
Review by MARCO VERGASSOLA - A Fabulous Gokyo Trek (10 days)
Review by Marco Vergassola
“Fabulous Gokyo Trek (10 days), We booked our trip (Gokyo Trek, 10 days) with the Green Society Adventures after reading about them in a few travel blogs about Nepal, and we couldn’t be happier of how things went. Impeccable organisation, fair prices, no hidden costs, flexibility in the planning and truly passionate people.
Everything was organised perfectly and Raj (our guide and the founder of the company) always has a plan B (probably C and D as well) to adapt the trek to your needs and desires. Raj was very caring at all times, from telling us on which side of the plane we should sit to see the mountains, to making sure we always had food and drinks which were safe for our European weak stomachs, to taking care of answering our million questions about Nepal traditions, altitude sickness, and the names of the peaks (which we kept forgetting), villages, trekking routes, dishes, etc.In simple words, we strongly recommend you to let the green society adventures take care of your next visit to Nepal. Surely you won’t regret it.”

Review by Tadej Vorenika
“Great Service Wonderful Experience, Green Society Adventure is Great and provides very kind service. We especially appreciated personalized offers based on our wishes. Definitely would recommend!”
You can guess how they felt on the scenic Himalayan trek in the Everest region. They were really happy to have collected wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. During the farewell dinner, they shared real trek experiences around turquoise glacial lakes and Everest mountain views from the Gokyo Ri viewpoint with fellow trekkers and our team. In conclusion, they had a feeling of accomplishment even though trekking challenges appeared on the way.
My Honest Gokyo Trek Review 2026/2027
Different travelers have distinct points of view regarding any trekking destination. As I have been serving adventurers from all over the world, providing reliable services through Green Society Adventure, I will give my honest Gokyo Valley trek review. Within two decades of my profession in tourism, I found the Gokyo route, one of the quieter Everest treks but rewarding.
Recently, I went with our team hiking to Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Tsum Valley Trek, and Manaslu Circuit Trek during the spring season (March to May). Every route is really satisfying, but I recommend the Gokyo trek. If you want peaceful trails, enjoy natural scenery, and vistas of the Himalayan ranges in the popular Everest region. Below, I have explained the review topic-wise.
Why I prefer Gokyo Over Other Everest Treks
As a professional guide and a founder of Green Society Adventure, it’s my responsibility to conduct any treks based on your preferences. I love to reach the base of Mt. Everest (8848 m) at an elevation of 5364 m and also tackle the challenges of other routes. However, I also prefer the Gokyo route over Everest Base Camp or the Three Passes Trek due to appropriate trekking days and challenging routes, which teach me to handle unforeseen circumstances and enjoy them together.
Without reaching the higher landmark, Kalapatthar, and Everest Base Camp, trekkers can savor the beauty of the Himalayas from distinct vantage points, including Gokyo Ri during the Gokyo trek. Beyond snow-clad mountains and local cultures, you can also get an opportunity to explore sacred lakes of Gokyo Valley, such as Longponga Tsho, Taujung Tsho, Gokyo Cho (Dudh Pokhari), Thonak Tsho, Ngozumpa Tsho, and Gyazumpa Tsho. Not only me. If you are an adventurer who loves peaceful trails, you will obviously choose this trek while comparing the Gokyo Valley trek vs. Everest Base Camp trek.
Scenery and Himalayan Vistas—What to expect
Each day, trekkers can delight in the magnificent environment, which gradually transforms into more rugged and mountainous terrain from subtropical forests after gaining elevation. With distant views of peaks from the start of the trek, as you land at Tenzing Hillary Airport, Lukla (2860 m), continue the trek to Everest View Hotel, and then go to Gokyo Ri for extensive panoramas of Mt. Everest/Sagarmatha, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu.
Comparison: Gokyo vs. Ghorepani, ABC, Tsum & Manaslu
Nepal’s every trail showcases surprises to you, but it totally depends on you to select the route that suits your fitness level, vacation days, and preferences. Ghorepani Poon Hill and the ABC trek are moderate routes that can be categorized as family-friendly treks due to their gradual ascents, well-maintained trails, and well-equipped teahouses. Several trekkers are interested in the EBC trek vs. the Gokyo Valley trek due to similar experiences.
Due to the popularity of the Classic Everest Base Camp, the trail becomes too busy during peak seasons (spring and autumn). Therefore, those who dream of reaching the base of Mt. Everest, the world's highest mountain, following the footprints of legendary mountaineers such as Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, must select the EBC route in 2026/2027. Nevertheless, for hikers who are keen to explore less-frequented places, the Gokyo trail is a better destination.
To know the lifestyles of Sherpas, the Khumbu region is the best, where you learn how deep they are connected to the Himalayas and their devotion to the tourism sector. On the other hand, Tsum Valley and Manaslu circuit treks offer you a profound understanding of Tibetan cultures and Buddhism since they are conducted near the Tibetan border, a restricted area. Both routes are less traveled, like Gokyo, and can allow you to enjoy the surreal charm of nature.
Best Season for Gokyo Trek: Spring and Autumn
Till now, every team guided by me has reached Gokyo Valley either in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to October). While most treks conducted by Green Society Adventure happened in the Annapurna region during the spring of 2026, we will go on the Gokyo trek in the autumn season as several queries are with us, and they are about to book. If you want to walk on dry trails of Gokyo with moderate temperature, do not miss the opportunity, as booking is open for 2026-2027. I generally do not recommend monsoon (June to August) and winter (December to February) because of the higher possibility of natural disasters.
While landslides and floods take place in the monsoon, caused by heavy rains, you may experience difficulty in winter due to heavy snowfalls that cause avalanches. Avoiding risks like injury on slippery paths and health problems related to severe cold, such as hypothermia, cold stress, dehydration, frostbite, and respiratory issues, plan to trek to Gokyo Valley only in ideal periods of the year. However, several routes like Upper Dolpo, Upper Mustang, and Nar Phu Valley are achievable in monsoon as they fall under rain shadow areas.
Trekkers that love taking risks often embark on treks like the Mardi Himal Trek, Langtang Valley Trek, Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, Gosaikunda Lake Trek, and Everest View Trek to enjoy views of snow-covered mountains and play with snow.
Accommodation & Tea Houses Along Gokyo Valley
We trekking agencies and guides have contacts with owners of teahouses, guesthouses, and restaurants that are serving trekkers on the Gokyo route. Whether it’s me as a guide or another of our team, we handle all logistics, including comfortable lodges and fresh meals. Health and safety is the first priority. You will find mostly well-organized teahouses that provide you warm hospitality during the stays. While you may not get facilities like those of urban areas, most teahouses offer Wi-Fi, device charging services, and hot showers.
Teahouses in a peaceful and family environment leave long-lasting positive vibes in your mind. Locals seem delighted by serving each guest and also show cultural performances on special occasions. I remember how client Marco Vergassola and his team felt happy by communicating with locals and sharing each other's traditions. Each group I took to the Gokyo Valley has never complained about teahouses and food services.
One of the previous trekkers was quite shocked due to the price of some meals, but I told the truth that some things are costlier than the normal price because of transportation problems. He also understood the matter and purchased needed things without bargaining, respecting locals’ struggle. Our team enjoyed both local cuisines and some international items like pizza, burgers, omelets, and sandwiches. Meat items are also available on Gokyo routes, but I suggested my guests eat them only in lower elevations to avoid digestive problems as well as because of limited electricity in the Himalayas, and they might be stale.
Difficulty & Fitness Level Required
The difficulty level depends on various factors, including elevation gain, hiking distance, duration, trekking time, trail conditions, and services on the route. However, trekkers find the same route either moderate or challenging based on individual fitness level and age. Generally, the Gokyo Valley trek is considered a moderate-to-demanding trek in Nepal. Compared to Everest Base Camp, this trek goes more quickly. Since our itinerary is customizable, you can add extra acclimatization at Machhermo before Gokyo.
I frequently check the weather forecast and also contact guides as well as teahouse owners for Gokyo route updates to show that I can have a plan B in case a major trail gets blocked due to reconstruction or landslides/avalanches/floods. Himalayan weather is unpredictable, which may create difficulty in the middle of routes. Therefore, only professional travelers like us know weather patterns and alternative ways to reach the destination safely.
The total trekking distance of the Gokyo Valley trek is 90 to 110 km based on the itinerary. I remember how our teams were enjoying themselves while covering daily trek distance, traversing parts of Sagarmatha National Park, traditional settlements, and glacial terrain. Trekkers support each other and take rest together at different spots when one feels low at some moment to adapt to the environment naturally. Starting the journey from 2860 m, trekkers reach 5357 m. Therefore, the chance of acute mountain sickness is high, but it can be prevented with proper preparation and caution.
