But you might question this first-impression at the end of your trip. This trek, among others, will also help in understanding the reasons behind the formation and sustenance of the Gurkha legend.
The journey starts with a 40-minute flight to Lukla Airport- one of the most extremes airport in the world. This flight also acts as an aerial introduction of the high peaks and snow-capped mountains that we will walk as part of the trek. From Lukla, we head out for Phakding – our stay for the night. This 2-3 hour trek introduces us to Rhododendrons, Magnolia trees and thick pine forests, prayer wheels, Mani walls, Gumbas, tea houses and most importantly – the Sherpas.
The Everest region is home to the Sherpas. Legendary as their skills for scaling the peaks in the region is, even legendary is their subtle humor and hospitality. The way takes us through the Sagarmatha National Park – a UNESCO natural world heritage. The trek to Namche is very steep and therefore some consider it a test of your determination to reach Everest base camp. If you succeed – the reward is a spectacular view of Mount Everest. Overnight at Namche.
Understanding the culture of Sherpas, the way they have adapted to the rough climate and rugged terrain is an important aspect of this trek. Today we will dwell around Namche, visit the beautiful village of Khumjung, talk with the locals, enjoy their tea, visit the Sagarmatha National Park headquarter, watch the panoramic view of Mount Everest, Mount Lhotse, Mount Nuptse, and Mount Amadablam among others and try to know the Sherpas and their dwellings at close quarters. In doing this all we acclimatize our bodies to the high altitude climate of the Everest region.
Tengboche, also called Thyangboche, is home to one of the oldest and biggest monasteries in the Everest region. It is the cultural and religious centers of the region. As a region that is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, today’s trail will offer us more symbols of the Buddhism- the five color mantra flags fluttering along the way, mani wall stones, gumba and monks on the way to Tengboche. Passing through the Dudh Koshi river banks and high winds, reaching Tengboche is an exhilarating experience – described by some as the Shangri La. This is one of the best places to have a perfect upfront view of the Mount Everest.
Khumjung, our today's retreat, is one of the oldest Sherpa villages at the foot of a sacred mountain Khumbila. This place is popular for the full spectrum view of the Mount Everest and other peaks of the Everest Himalayan Range. We will enjoy the Mount Everest view here while enjoying the hospitality of the Sherpas. The place is home to the monastery, which purportedly houses the only scalp of the mythical Yeti. But to reach this place is what is interesting today. Through our ways, The way to Khumjung offers magnificent views of the Everest Himalayan Range and the trek is gradual and at times steep.
Its never totally satisfying to view Mount Everest and the splendid glory of the Mount Everest Himalayan Range. But nonetheless storing all the beautiful memories in our heart, today we start our return journey. As part of the Everest View Trek circuit, we will not trace our steps back but will head for Monju. Monju is a small Sherpa village between Namche and Lukla. Trek from Khumjung to Monju is comparatively easier and as we get down from higher altitude you will find that your feet will feel lighter today and that help you enjoy the trek.
After having good rest at Monju and waking to a warm sun, we head for the last day of our trekking in the Everest region. As we continue to climb the altitude we once again began to see more of the Rhododendron, pine and bamboo forests on our way. And to our North, we have a splendid view of Kwangde peak. Buddhist prayer flags fluttering along the mountains, Mani stone walls, small Sherpa villages and crossing glacial rivers that are rushing down the stream from the high Himalayas through suspension bridges is an exciting part of the trek to Lukla from Monju. At night in Lukla, we rest and relax and share our experiences with the team, as tomorrow we will flying out of Lukla and part from the porters.
On your flight to Lukla, you had seen the Everest Himalayan Range with awe. But on our return flight, when we will see those peaks from the flight window – a feeling of knowing the peaks and of being there as one of the part will fill your heart with joy. This is the most precious moment so look out for it.
